Family Education Parent/Child Programs

Family and consumer science classes provide practical knowledge about everyday life: human growth and development; family issues; personal growth; consumer issues; foods & nutrition; clothing & textiles and resource management. Individuals and families use this knowledge to make sound decisions that contribute to a healthy, productive and more fulfilling life. The knowledge and skills acquired will empower individuals and strengthen families thereby enhancing their quality of life and the communities where they reside.

Parent Education students gain an understanding of their role as the primary and most important teacher their children have. This comes through their exposure to child development principles and opportunities to practice and master skills that complement each child’s age-appropriate needs.

Group discussions cover pertinent child rearing issues faced by parents, grandparents and caregivers, coupled with informative handouts that provide support for the age related challenges. Discussion topic examples include positive discipline, effective communication, healthy self-esteem and anger management, as well as specific age-related developmental milestones ranging from toilet training to feeding and nutrition. The curriculum and presentations remain relevant and appropriate through continuing education efforts by instructors who stay current in educational and child development research.

Teachers strive to give parents, grandparents and caregivers knowledge, understanding and practical skills that can be transferred to real life situations. Students share the joys, concerns and challenges of parenting while nurturing each other in the classroom environment. The benefits of this early learning are evident as parents, feeling empowered, continue to take responsibility for their child’s learning as they participate throughout the elementary, middle and high school years.
