Acquired Brain Injury Program at ECC

Philosophy

The Acquired Brain Injury Program provides students with the tools needed to succeed in important areas of daily life including interpersonal relationships, work, school and community.

Focus is on:

Speech language pathologists
Rehabilitation counselors
Counselors
Paraprofessional support staff

The program strives to maintain a low staff to student ratio. It also provides an alternative for those students who may struggle in a fast-paced environment.

Campus

The Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) is a small campus surrounded by open parkland. This location affords ABI program access for residents of the South County and adjacent areas. The campus size creates a comfortable and pleasant environment for students, and is manageable for persons of all levels. There is a cafeteria, bookstore, library, and a DSPS office on site.

ABI Curriculum

Classes cover the following areas:

Communication: receptive and expressive communication skills, including listening, reading, talking, writing and non-verbal communication.
Cognitive Retraining: memory strategies, organization and time management through classroom exercises and applied computer programs.
Personal Development: critical issues, adjustment to disability, relationships, stress management.
Advocacy Awareness: brain anatomy and function, self advocacy.
Vocational Exploration: leadership, exploring volunteer opportunities.

ABI Class Schedule

Monday through Thursday,12:30 - 3:30 PM, Educational Cultural Complex 4343 Ocean View Blvd.
18-week semesters: Fall (begins September) and Spring (begins January)
8-week Summer Session: (begins June)

Enrollment Procedures

Completion of the following requirements is advised 4 to 8 weeks PRIOR to the beginning of the semester:

Intake Interview at DSPS Office (ECC)
Completed Application
Medical documentation of brain injury (acquired after age 13)
