San Diego Continuing Education's Fashion Program includes a variety of courses to meet life and industry skills as well as preparation for academic advancement.

Course Descriptions

  • Sewing Fundamentals

    Sewing Fundamentals emphasizes the development of basic sewing skills used to create apparel. This course focuses on pattern and fabric selection, basic construction techniques, pressing skills, and timesaving technologies and techniques.

  • Sewing Like a Professional

    Achieve professional standards of workmanship without complicated and unnecessary work Gain confidence using new fabrics, different types of sewing machines, industrial techniques and learn advanced skill that will add personal fit, distinctive details and custom finishes to your sewn products. Emphasis on commercial, custom, and timesaving techniques.

    Sewing Like a Professional Class Schedule

  • Contemporary Tailoring / Couture and Contemporary Tailoring

    Traditional tailoring techniques using both custom and contemporary methods to achieve professional results. Time-saving machine skills and new shaping fabrics are presented.

  • Textile Surface Design

    Textile design using various fiber arts techniques applicable in the production of wearing apparel and textile items. Creation of original designs encouraged.

  • Making Quilted Products

    Quilt making using contemporary techniques to advance fiber arts skills. Creative original designs encouraged. Added focus on growing fiber arts/ quilting industry.

  • Sewing for the Home / Interior Spaces

    Professional construction techniques applied to décor items.

  • Power Sewing / Fashion Entrepreneurship

    This course is designed for the student desiring to acquire entry level skills in sewn product manufacturing industry. Production techniques on power and home sewing equipment will be used in the classroom. Instruction in employment preparation for either the global fashion industry or starting a sewn product business will be included.

  • Fundamentals of Patternmaking

    This course introduces the student to basic patternmaking skills used to create apparel and costumes. The course focuses on the development of garment patterns using one or more of the following methods: drafting, flat pattern manipulation, draping and beginning computer aided patternmaking. Information on copying previously made garments will be included along with guidelines for the use of a croquis for garment design.
